Danielle Andress is an Associate Professor in the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (2008) and an MFA from California College of the Arts (2017). Her work explores contemporary identity politics, digital architectures, and material culture through woven textiles, blending craft traditions with new media.
Teaching includes courses like Digital Jacquard Weaving, Cloth at Scale, and dyeing techniques. She has exhibited nationally/internationally, including at the John Michael Kohler Art Center, SPACES Cleveland, and the Anchorage Museum of Art. Awards include residencies at Arquetopia (Mexico), MASS MoCA, and grants from San Francisco Shines and Lia Cook.
Key research themes involve the interplay between digital technology and handcraft, socio-economic implications of textile production, and multicultural perspectives on objecthood. Collaborations include The Weaving Mill, an industrial studio addressing labor and accessibility through textile education.
