Daniela Maria Raillard Arias serves as Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Anthropology Department within Reed College's Division of History and Social Sciences. An anthropological archaeologist specializing in Indigenous Americas landscapes and ecologies with pre-colonial Andean focus, she integrates community-centered approaches with advanced archaeological methodologies.
Her educational background includes a BA (hons) from the University of Toronto (2016) and MA from Northwestern University (2019), with Ph.D. in Anthropology pending completion at Northwestern. During doctoral studies, she maintained affiliations with the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR), Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Andean Cultures and Histories programs.
Raillard Arias's research examines how mortuary architecture functions as material extensions of ancestral agency through her signature project 'Ecologies of Ancestors.' Her fieldwork centers on the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológica Medio Ambiente, Paisaje, y Arquitectura de los Sitios Ancestrales Chachapoya (PIA MAPA SACHA) conducted in ethical partnership with Chachapoya descendant communities in northeastern Peru's Amazonian Andes. Methodologically, she combines participatory mapping, aerial drone photogrammetry, dendroecology, ethnoforestry, and oral histories after receiving specialized training through SAROI spatial archaeology and CNAIR Indigenous research fellowships.

Her community-engaged scholarship has received positive recognition from Leymebamba and Chachapoyas residents for its transparent and culturally sensitive approach. As a scholar-educator at Reed, she bridges environmental anthropology with Indigenous and community archaeology perspectives in both research and teaching contexts.
