Professor Daniela La Penna is a distinguished academic at the University of Reading, holding the position of Professor and Italian Programme Director. Her academic roles include REF Unit of Assessment Co-lead and former Head of the Department of Languages and Cultures (2019-2023). She leads research projects on modern Italian culture, translation studies, and intellectual history, particularly focusing on 20th-century literary and publishing dynamics. Her work explores topics like Benedetto Croce's cultural influence, post-war publishing networks, and experimentalism in Italian poetry. She supervises doctoral research in comparative publishing history, translation, and literary studies.
La Penna's research is supported by grants such as the Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2023-24) and the AHRC Early Career Grant (£191,866, 2012-2015). She has published extensively, including books on Amelia Rosselli and edited volumes on Luigi Meneghello. Her academic affiliations include roles at the Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing and editorial contributions to journals like The Italianist.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Italian literature, translation theory, and cultural history. She has supervised over 15 PhD students, many of whom focus on Italian intellectual history, publishing, and translation.
