Del Boca earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988. Her academic journey includes significant leadership roles, including serving on the General Council of the Compagnia San Paolo (2012-2020) and the Scientific Committee of Confindustria.
Her research focuses on Labor Economics and the Economics of the Family, with particular emphasis on gender differences, household decision-making, and investments in early childhood. Del Boca's work bridges academic research and policy implementation, examining how family policies affect labor market participation, fertility decisions, and child development outcomes. She has published extensively in top journals including The American Economic Review, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Population Economics, and Labour Economics.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on gender equality, work-family balance, and early childhood interventions. Her research demonstrates how quality childcare affects female labor force participation and child development, how parental leave policies influence gender roles within families, and how educational interventions can reduce gender gaps in STEM fields. She frequently examines Italian policy contexts while drawing comparisons with other European countries.
Del Boca has received significant recognition for her contributions to economics and public policy:
- Order of the Merit of the Italian Republic (2007) awarded by President Giorgio Napolitano
- Tarantelli Prize (2021) for her research contributions
As Director of CHILD and Scientific Director of the Impact Evaluation Unit, Del Boca oversees research programs evaluating the effectiveness of social policies, particularly those related to family support and early childhood development. Her work on programs like 'Coding Girls' demonstrates her commitment to translating research into practical interventions that address gender disparities. She has advised on numerous policy initiatives, including Italy's implementation of the European Recovery Fund (PNRR) with specific focus on gender equality measures.
Her leadership extends to academic governance, having served as President of the European Society for Population Economics (2000) and as a member of various scientific committees including the Dondena Bocconi Scientific Committee.
