Professor Daniel Wang is a faculty member in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, part of the College of Natural Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (1990). His research focuses on galactic ecosystems, particularly the interplay between galaxies and their surroundings through high-energy processes like supernova feedback, black hole accretion, and intergalactic medium interactions. Utilizing multi-wavelength observations (X-ray, radio, infrared, ultraviolet), he studies hot gas dynamics, magnetic fields, and galactic winds in systems such as the Milky Way's central molecular zone and edge-on galaxies via the CHANG-ES survey. Key projects include analyzing the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) in nearby galaxies and studying gravitationally lensed high-redshift starbursts through the PASSAGES collaboration. Wang has advised multiple graduate and undergraduate students and delivered invited talks at international symposia such as the Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics and IAU Commission H1 events.
Research emphasizes observational and computational approaches to understand matter/energy flows, with recent work on magnetic field structures in galactic halos, lensed protoclusters, and cosmic ray transport. His work bridges observational astronomy with theoretical modeling, often involving collaborations like the CHANG-ES and PASSAGES teams.
