Daniel Sunshine is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for the Humanities, Tufts University, contributing to the Slavery, Colonialism, and their Legacies at Tufts Initiative. His role encompasses public humanities projects, teaching, and research on the historical and contemporary impacts of slavery and colonialism in the United States.
Education:

Dr. Sunshine's research focuses on the history of race and slavery in the early United States, with particular emphasis on African American experiences during the Civil War and Reconstruction in Appalachia. His current book project, "A Curse Upon Your Union: Crafting Black Freedom and Wartime Reconstruction in Appalachia", explores how Black communities navigated freedom and rebuilt their lives in the Appalachian region. Additionally, he engages in collaborative research and advocacy with an African American community group in Richmond, Virginia, addressing the legacies of medical racism in the 19th century.
As part of the Slavery, Colonialism, and their Legacies at Tufts Initiative, Dr. Sunshine contributes to interdisciplinary efforts that connect historical scholarship with public engagement and education.
