Daniel Stein Falster

Dr. Daniel Stein Falster is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. He is affiliated with the Evolution & Ecology Research Centre and School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences.

Education:

• BSc from UNSW
• MSc and PhD from Macquarie University
• Postdoctoral research in Norway and Austria

Research Focus: Falster uses mathematical models, computational simulations, and large datasets to study ecosystem dynamics. His work includes predicting plant-type distributions via eco-evolutionary models, developing the AusTraits database for Australian plant traits, and advancing size-structured ecological theories. He examines climate and human impacts on vegetation, linking trait trade-offs to species coexistence and community structure.

Teaching: He convenes BEES2041 - Data Analysis for Life and Earth Science and co-leads an annual Intermediate R course for HDR students.

Collaborations: Works with researchers from STRI (Panama), University of Melbourne, Macquarie University, and the joint Cornsters lab (with Assoc. Prof. Will Cornwell).
