Daniel Stashuk is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on electrophysiological characterization of neuromuscular disorders, quantitative electromyography (EMG), and motor unit analysis. He holds a PhD (1985) and MEng (1982) from McMaster University, and a BEng (1978) from the University of Waterloo.
Research interests include neuromuscular transmission instability, motor unit number estimation, and clinical applications of EMG signal decomposition. His work emphasizes developing diagnostic tools for neuromuscular disorders using advanced EMG techniques like DQEMG. He teaches BME 462 (Biomedical Engineering Design Workshop) and actively supervises graduate students.
Key contributions involve linking motor unit remodelling to aging, exercise, and disease. His publications span over 40 years, addressing topics like sarcopenia, diabetic neuropathy, and neuromuscular junction dysfunction. He collaborates internationally on projects such as bed-rest studies and nerve regeneration biomarker development.
Notable innovations include stimulation-free motor unit number estimation and near-fiber EMG techniques. His work bridges engineering and medicine to improve clinical electrophysiological assessments, particularly in aging populations and neurodegenerative conditions.
