Daniel Sims

Dr. Daniel Sims is an Associate Professor in the Department of First Nations Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). He is a member of the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation and specializes in Indigenous studies, history, reconciliation, and colonialism in northern British Columbia. His research focuses on community impacts of hydroelectric projects like the W.A.C. Bennett Dam and historical developments in the Finlay-Parsnip watershed.

His research interests include Indigenous knowledge systems, treaty/land claims, and the intersection of history and reconciliation. Current projects include books on the Williston Lake reservoir’s impacts and a study on colonial development narratives. He has authored works on topics like influenza epidemics, Mennonite missionary interactions, and hydroelectric displacement.

Dr. Sims also consults on reconciliation and Indigenization efforts, delivering public talks and workshops. He supervises graduate students in areas like land-based learning, traditional healing, and Northwest Coast art. His work bridges academic scholarship with community-driven research, emphasizing Indigenous perspectives in historical analysis.
