Daniel Schrag is the Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology and Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at Harvard University, where he also serves as Co-Director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. He joined Harvard in 1997 after teaching at Princeton University.
Education: Schrag holds a B.S. in Geology and Geophysics and Political Science from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Research Interests: His work integrates geochemistry, paleoclimatology, and energy policy, with emphasis on:
- Reconstructing past climate using geologic records to inform future climate projections
- Developing carbon capture technologies and low-carbon synthetic fuels
- Analyzing energy transition policies and climate finance mechanisms
Publication Trends (2022-2025): Recent articles cluster in three domains:
- Climate Policy: Carbon taxation, border adjustments, and financing mechanisms
- Paleoclimatology: Ocean temperature proxies and Pleistocene transitions
- Energy Technology: Green hydrogen, heat pumps, and direct air capture
Awards:
- MacArthur Fellowship ("Genius Grant")
- James B. Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union
Leadership: Schrag leads the Climate, Atmosphere, and Oceans Research Group (Schrag Group) and co-directs Harvard's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program, bridging scientific research with policy design.
