Daniel S. Brandes serves as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Skidmore College, commencing his appointment in Fall 2025. He is establishing the Brandes Research Group within the Department of Chemistry, housed in the Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS) building.
His educational trajectory includes:
- B.A. in Chemistry from Williams College (2018)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University (2023)
- Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan (2025)
Dr. Brandes' research pioneers photocatalysis for synthetic organic chemistry, developing novel methodologies to construct pharmaceutically-relevant compounds while modernizing classical reactions through sustainable photochemical alternatives. His lab emphasizes replacing hazardous reaction conditions with greener approaches, providing students comprehensive training in photochemical techniques, synthetic methodology development, and compound characterization.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Brandes Research Group is currently establishing laboratory facilities in CIS 356, with active research operations scheduled to begin Fall 2025. The group will focus on organic synthesis innovation through photochemistry, creating undergraduate research opportunities in sustainable pharmaceutical development.
