Daniel Nexon is Professor at Georgetown University with joint appointments in the School of Foreign Service and Department of Government. His research spans international-relations theory, American foreign policy, power politics, and the relationship between popular culture and world politics.
Nexon analyzes international hierarchy through frameworks of empires, hegemonic powers, and confederations. He received the ISSS Best Book Award for his work on religious conflict and dynastic empires in early modern Europe. His current scholarship examines challenges to liberal international order and the transformation of American global leadership.
Recent publications explore relational approaches to international studies, network theory applications to grand strategy, and the rise of illiberal politics. He co-authored 'Exit from Hegemony: The Unraveling of the American Global Order' and co-edited 'Harry Potter and International Relations'.
Nexon has held fellowships at Stanford University and Ohio State University, served as lead editor of International Studies Quarterly (2014-2018), and worked at the U.S. Department of Defense as a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow.
