Dr. Daniel Messinger is a Professor of Psychology, Pediatrics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Music Engineering at the University of Miami. He serves as Director of the Early Play and Development Lab, Research Director of the Linda Ray Intervention Center, and Director of the Child Division within the Department of Psychology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah (1994). His research focuses on understanding social, emotional, and language development through computational analysis of big behavioral data, including studies on autism assessment, face-to-face interaction, and classroom dynamics. He has led NIH- and NSF-funded projects and mentored 16 doctoral students. His lab employs behavioral imaging and machine learning to analyze interactions in diverse populations, such as children with autism, hearing loss, or poverty. He is actively recruiting graduate students in developmental and child clinical psychology.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Utah, 1994
Research Interests: Dr. Messinger’s work integrates developmental psychology with computational methods to study interaction dynamics. Key areas include autism spectrum disorders, parent-infant communication, and social inclusion in educational settings. He develops automated tools like Who Said What (WSW) 2.0 to analyze classroom speech and facial expressions. His lab investigates how repeated social interactions influence developmental trajectories, using techniques such as time-varying effect models and agent-based simulations.
Grants & Awards: Funded by NIH, NSF, and the Institute of Education Sciences. Notable grants include studies on classroom speech analysis, autism assessment, and the impact of environmental factors on child health.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Early Play and Development Lab and collaborates with the Linda Ray Intervention Center. Coordinates the Psychological Sciences Program and oversees the Child Division’s academic and research activities.
