Daniel Menning is an Associate Professor for 19th Century History at the Institute of Modern History, Department of History, Faculty of Humanities, University of Tübingen, Germany. He has held this position since February 2016, after serving as an Assistant Professor at the same institution from 2012 to 2016.
Dr. Menning completed his Habilitation in Modern History in 2019 and earned his PhD in Modern German History in 2012, both from the University of Tübingen. His academic journey began with studies in History, English Literature and Language, and Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen (2002-2007).
Dr. Menning's research focuses on the History of the Nobility (18th-20th Century), History of Conservatism, History of European and North American Stock Market Speculation (17th-20th century), Social and Economic History (18th-20th Century), Comparative German and English History, and more recently, the History of Retailing in early modern Europe. His work often examines the intersection of economic developments and social structures, with a particular interest in how global trade networks impacted local communities.
His recent publications demonstrate a growing interest in comparative retail history, particularly examining village shops and customer networks in Germany and England during the early modern period. This research represents an expansion of his earlier work on nobility, landed estates, and stock market speculation into the realm of everyday economic life and consumer behavior.
