Daniel McArthur

Dr Daniel McArthur is a Lecturer in Education at the Department of Education, University of York, where he joined in Spring 2022. He is a member of the Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice and teaches research methods at both undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MA) levels starting from Autumn 2022.

Dr McArthur's educational background includes:

• PhD in Sociology from the London School of Economics (2019)
• MSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics
• BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford

Dr McArthur's research falls at the intersection of education, sociology, and political science, with a focus on the relationship between education and economic inequalities. His work particularly examines the role of geography in shaping educational inequalities and the consequences of school reforms for political attitudes. Using primarily quantitative methods, he works with survey, census, and administrative data to investigate how policies to expand and reform education either exacerbate or ameliorate economic disparities, and how these changes influence public support for redistributive social policies.

His current research focuses on four main areas: the geography of educational attainment across 19 high-income democracies since 1980; the relationship between geographic mobility and social mobility; educational institutions and social mobility using historical data on 20th century Europe; and the consequences of status threat on social attitudes. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on educational hierarchy, student belonging, and retention in higher education.

Dr McArthur previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford on an ERC-funded project called 'SchoolPol - The Transformation of Post War Education: Causes & Effects.' His research has been published in journals such as Comparative Education Review and Student Success, with several open access publications available.

As a member of the Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice, Dr McArthur is actively involved in research that connects educational policy with social justice outcomes. He is accepting PhD students and encourages collaboration with colleagues interested in his research areas.
