Daniel Large is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Policy at the Central European University (CEU), Hungary. He holds a PhD and MSc from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and a BA in Politics from the University of York. His research focuses on China-Africa relations, African politics, development and security dynamics, and global governance.
Dr. Large has authored China and Africa: The New Era (2021) and co-edited New Directions in Africa and China Studies (2018). His work analyzes China's evolving role in African development, security, and global governance, with case studies in Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, and East Africa. He has directed the Sudan Open Archive since 2005 and held research roles at institutions like the China-Africa Research Initiative (Johns Hopkins University).
His interdisciplinary research bridges political economy, security studies, and development theory, emphasizing agency, media narratives, and the Global South's geopolitical positioning. He teaches courses on global governance, South-South development, and China's international politics.
