His research focuses on differential equations applied to mathematical biology, including population dynamics, invasive species, epidemiology, and cancer treatment modeling. He also investigates educational strategies in calculus instruction to improve student success. Kern has mentored 8 graduate students and 14 undergraduates in projects like Zika virus modeling, oyster-mussel competition dynamics, and Fourier analysis in music.
Teaching spans 14 FGCU courses, including Calculus I-III, Differential Equations, and graduate topics in applied mathematics. He has served on three biology master’s thesis committees and developed special topics courses in biomathematics research.
