Dr. Daniel K. Young is a Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has directed the Wisconsin Insect Research Collection (WIRC) since 1993 and serves as Chair of the UW Natural History Museums Council. His research focuses on insect systematics, taxonomy, and biodiversity, particularly in Coleoptera (beetles), with expertise in Pyrochroidae and Ischaliidae. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and contributed chapters to major works like American Beetles. Dr. Young teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, including Introduction to Entomology and Advanced Taxonomy, and mentors students in directed research. His awards include the Distinguished Teaching Award from UW-Madison and recognition for contributions to systematic entomology.
Education: Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Entomology from Michigan State University (1981, 1973, 1971). Research interests include global biodiversity assessments, training future taxonomists, and supporting natural history collections. He collaborates internationally and leads projects on underdescribed taxa like Lemodes in Pacific island ecosystems.
Awards: Driesbach Memorial Award, Excellence in Teaching Award (UW), Distinguished Achievement Award (ESA), and Special Achievement Award for American Beetles contributions.
