معرفی
Daniel Johnson, PhD, is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He previously held a Professorship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as Scientific Director of the Acute Leukemia Working Group and contributed to the Hematology/Oncology and Pharmacology departments. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms driving head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), including drug resistance pathways, STAT3 signaling inhibition, and caspase-8 mutations. Dr. Johnson has authored over 120 publications and co-edited books on cancer biology. He leads NIH-funded research and serves on editorial boards for journals like Leukemia and Cancer Research. Dr. Johnson is also deeply committed to mentoring, having guided 68 trainees into academic and clinical careers.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, North Park University (Chicago)
- Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, North Park University
- MA and PhD in Molecular Biology, Princeton University
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, UCSF
Research Interests:
Dr. Johnson’s work centers on overcoming drug resistance in HNSCC through targeted therapies. Key areas include:
- Inhibition of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins
- STAT3 decoy oligonucleotides for undruggable oncogenes
- Caspase-8 mutation effects on tumor progression
- Precise drug combinations using in vivo and organoid models

- Continuous NIH funding since 1995
- 2014 G. David Roodman Excellence in Mentorship Award
- Hillman Fellow for Innovative Cancer Research (2007)
- NIDCD Board of Scientific Counselors (2019–present)
Advising & Grants:
As a mentor, Dr. Johnson emphasizes translational research and career development. He led the University of Pittsburgh’s Career Mentoring Program for junior faculty. His NIH grants focus on advancing clinical trials for HNSCC and leukemia.
Labs & Teams:
His lab at UCSF develops novel therapeutic strategies, including STAT3 inhibitors and combination therapies targeting drug-resistant HNSCC tumors.
