Daniel J.H. Greenwood is Professor of Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, Hofstra University. He previously served as the S.J. Quinney Professor of Law at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law. He holds a JD from Yale Law School and an AB magna cum laude from Harvard University, with additional graduate studies in political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
His research centers on corporate law, democratic theory, and the rights of artificial and natural groups. He explores the tension between individual rights and group identity, particularly in the context of corporate personhood, shareholder rights, and minority religious freedoms. His work critically examines the role of corporations in democratic society, the legitimacy of corporate law, and the ethical dimensions of corporate behavior.
His recent publications span topics such as corporate misbehavior (e.g., Enron), shareholder entitlements, constitutional limitations on corporate speech, and the intersection of Jewish law with modern legal theory. The articles reflect a deep engagement with both doctrinal analysis and philosophical inquiry, often drawing from political theory, ethics, and religious traditions to challenge conventional legal frameworks.
Professor Greenwood has contributed to prominent legal journals including the Yale Law and Policy Review, University of Missouri-Kansas City Law Review, Brooklyn Law Review, and Utah Law Review. He has authored amicus briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court and published opinion pieces in the New York Times and Salt Lake Tribune, demonstrating a commitment to public legal discourse.
He teaches Corporate Finance, Business Organizations, and Torts, and has taught Constitutional Law II, Commercial Law, and seminars on Jewish law, corporate ethics, and the Federalist Papers. He has advised students through seminar supervision and curriculum development, though specific advisees are not listed. His work reflects sustained engagement with legal reform, academic freedom, and constitutional rights.
He is affiliated with scholarly and public interest initiatives such as ReclaimDemocracy.org and has contributed to interdisciplinary forums on evil, restorative justice, and constitutionalism. His lectures and essays often bridge legal scholarship with ethical and spiritual reflection.
