Daniel Hughes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at KU Leuven's Faculty of Engineering Science, affiliated with the Distributed and Secure Software (DistriNet) research unit. He serves on the Social and Societal Ethics Committee and Faculty Council as senior academic staff.
His research focuses on distributed systems, computer networks, and embedded IoT technologies, with emphasis on wireless communications security, energy harvesting, and low-latency control networks for industrial applications. Current work addresses constraints in dynamic environments through phase-coherent networking and capability-adaptive edge platforms.
Recent publications analyze sustainable battery-free energy harvesting and flexible hardware platforms for smart environments, reflecting his dual focus on theoretical frameworks and practical embedded implementations. Projects like SwarmNET demonstrate applications in robotics control and 6G testbed development.
He teaches Software for Embedded Systems (H04L2A), Real-Time Control (H09J9A), Industrial Internet Infrastructure (H04I0A), Computer Networks (G0Q43A), and Distributed Systems (H04G7A), integrating research insights into curriculum design.
