Daniel Hirmas

Daniel Hirmas is a Professor and the B.L. Allen Endowed Chair in Pedology at Texas Tech University's Department of Plant and Soil Science. His research focuses on the interplay between climate, geomorphic processes, land use, and soil properties across scales.

• Education: B.A. in Biology (Texas A&M University, 1999), M.S. in Soil Science (Texas Tech University, 2003), Ph.D. in Soil and Water Sciences (University of California–Riverside, 2008).

Research Interests: Dr. Hirmas' Pedology research group investigates soil genesis, pore network evolution, and the spatial distribution of soil components. Their work addresses how environmental factors shape soil morphology and hydrology in diverse ecosystems.

Academic Appointments: Before joining Texas Tech in 2023, he held faculty positions at the University of California–Riverside (2018–2022) and the University of Kansas (2008–2018).

• Teaching: Courses include PSS 2432 (Principles and Practices in Soils), PSS 4332 (Soil Morphology and Classification), and PSS 5337 (Advanced Soil Morphology and Classification).

Labs & Teams: Leads the Pedology research group at Texas Tech, integrating interdisciplinary approaches to study soil dynamics and environmental interactions.
