Daniel F. Walczyk is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he also serves as Director of the Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS) and Associate Director of Manufacturing for CATS. With over 25 years of academic experience since joining RPI in 1996, his career bridges significant industry work at General Electric with cutting-edge research in sustainable manufacturing.
His academic credentials include:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Syracuse University (1986)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1991)
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1996)
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from New York State (1994)
Dr. Walczyk's research centers on Rapid Tooling, Environmentally Conscious Design, and Machine Design, with pioneering work in biocomposites using natural fibers (hemp, flax), thermoplastic composites, and additive manufacturing. His investigations span material properties, novel processing techniques like electron beam curing and in situ impregnation, and sustainable applications in automotive sectors. He emphasizes reducing environmental impact while maintaining performance standards through innovative manufacturing solutions.
Analysis of his 2019-2024 publications reveals consistent advancement in bio-based composite processing, particularly in natural fiber thermal properties, carbon fiber handling mechanics, and low-cost recycling methods. His work demonstrates a strategic shift toward practical industrial applications of sustainable composites, with growing emphasis on decortication processes for natural fibers and electron beam technologies for thermoset curing.
His distinguished honors include:
- DAAD Fellowship (1995)
- NSF CAREER Award (1998)
- Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (1999)
- SAE Teetor Educational Award (2000)
- ASME Fellow (2011)
Dr. Walczyk holds five U.S. patents with two pending, reflecting his translational research impact. He actively collaborates with RPI's Center for Materials, Devices, and Integrated Systems (CMDIS) while leading CATS initiatives that integrate automation with advanced materials development for next-generation manufacturing systems.
