Daniel E. Colón is a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish at the University of Virginia. He holds a PhD in Spanish American and Luso-Brazilian Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Notre Dame (2010) and a BA in International Relations and Spanish from Tufts University (2000). His research focuses on Latin American and Luso-Brazilian literature, with emphases on Pablo Neruda’s early works, folklore in narrative traditions, and the sociopolitical dimensions of literature under authoritarian regimes.
Colón has been awarded prestigious fellowships, including the Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship (2015–2016) for research at the Federal University of Bahia and the Fund for Teachers Grant (2018) for curriculum development on Latin American Indigenous cultures. His publications explore topics such as Neruda’s autobiographical poetry, the role of folklore in Angolan historiography, and allegorical representations of Portuguese dictatorships.
He has presented at major conferences like the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and his scholarly contributions include translations of seminal Brazilian texts like Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s Roots of Brazil.
