Daniel Brayton is a Professor of English and American Literatures at Middlebury College and a member of the Environmental Studies Program. He specializes in ecocritical approaches to literature, maritime studies, and early modern drama, particularly Shakespeare. His research explores intersections between literature and environmental thought, as seen in his monograph Shakespeare’s Ocean: An Ecocritical Exploration (2012) and co-edited volume Ecocritical Shakespeare (2011).
Education: PhD in English from Cornell University (2001). He has held visiting appointments at Sea Education Association and the Williams-Mystic Program in Maritime Studies. He serves as Literature, Art, and Music section editor for Coriolis: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Maritime Studies.
Teaching focuses include nature poetry, maritime literature, and courses on literature’s engagement with environmental challenges. His awards include the Northeast Modern Language Association Book Award for his work on Shakespeare and ecology. He advises senior theses and oversees independent research projects in literary studies and environmental humanities.
