Professor Daniel A. Llano is a faculty member in the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds the Benjamin R. and Elinor W. Bullock and Edwin E. and Jeanne Bullock Goldberg Professorial Scholar and LAS Distinguished Professorial Scholar titles. His primary research focuses on auditory system processing, particularly the role of top-down cortical projections in complex sound interpretation and aging-related neural dysfunction. Llano's lab employs advanced techniques like two-photon imaging and optogenetics to study auditory circuits. He also investigates Alzheimer's disease biomarkers and the link between hearing loss and neurodegeneration. His work bridges neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and neurology, with clinical interests in aging-related auditory disorders. Awards include the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the Golden Apple Teaching Award.
Key research themes include auditory midbrain organization, corticofugal pathways, and neuroimaging innovations. Llano collaborates with the Beckman Institute and Carle Illinois College of Medicine. His educational contributions include teaching clinical neuroscience and mentoring students in molecular physiology.
