Danie Etienne serves as a visiting professor of dance and director of the Helen McGehee Visiting Artist Program in Dance at Randolph College, joining the institution in 2023 with expertise rooted in Haitian kompa traditions and contemporary dance practices.
Her educational background includes:
- Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, where she discovered dance film and choreography within Black femininity contexts
- Master of Fine Arts in choreography and performance from Florida State University
Etienne's research explores cultural identity through movement, focusing on Haitian kompa music's rhythmic foundations and its intersection with Black feminist perspectives in dance. Her choreographic work examines how embodied experiences convey social narratives, blending traditional Haitian elements with modern performance techniques. She has collaborated extensively with acclaimed artists including Jawole Zollar, Ron K. Brown, and Davalois Fearon, contributing to interdisciplinary projects that bridge cultural heritage and contemporary expression.
As an educator, Etienne implements a collaborative teaching methodology where students actively co-create their learning journey. She emphasizes that dancers' lived bodily experiences form the foundation for artistic growth, encouraging experimentation through deliberate mistake-making to dismantle perfectionist mentalities in creative processes.
