Dana F. Boatman

Dana F. Boatman is a Professor of Neurology and Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Auditory Neurophysiology Laboratory and leads research in auditory neuroscience.

Dr. Boatman received her doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania and her clinical training at George Washington University. She completed post-doctoral research and clinical training at Johns Hopkins.

Her research focuses on understanding how the human brain perceives sounds in complex listening environments. The laboratory conducts brain mapping studies that combine electrophysiology (intracranial, scalp), behavioral testing, signal processing, and computational modeling. Current studies supported by NIH and the Department of Defense focus on modeling spatial-temporal dynamics of high-frequency cortical auditory responses in normal and impaired listeners. Dr. Boatman's work particularly examines auditory cortex, auditory neuroscience, cortical auditory disorders, and epilepsy.

Dr. Boatman's laboratory provides NIH-supported research training for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees in neuroscience, audiology, biostatistics, and biomedical engineering. Her current research is investigating the role of high-frequency (>30 Hz) neural oscillations in human auditory perception.

She directs the Clinical and Computational Auditory neuroscience laboratory, which combines electrophysiology recordings (intracranial, scalp), behavioral paradigms, and statistical modeling methods to study the cortical dynamics of normal and impaired auditory perception. The laboratory is particularly interested in measuring and modeling variability in spatiotemporal cortical response patterns as a function of individual listening abilities and acoustic sound properties.
