Dana E. Stewart

Dana E. Stewart is an Associate Professor and Collegiate Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Binghamton University’s Mountainview College. She received her PhD and MA in Italian from Stanford University and BA in French from the University of Southern California. Active in Binghamton’s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CEMERS), she serves on the Advisory Board for its journal Mediaevalia, previously acting as Editor-in-Chief. She has held leadership roles such as faculty director of Women’s Studies and chair of the Department of Romance Languages, and was vice president of the Dante Society of America.

Stewart’s research focuses on medieval and Renaissance Italian literature, particularly the Sicilian School, Dolce Stil Nuovo, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, and intersections between love, science, and magic in the Middle Ages. Her teaching includes Dante’s Inferno, Divine Comedy, and Renaissance literature analysis.

Her publications reflect interdisciplinary approaches to medieval studies, emphasizing global intertexts and scientific discourse. Awards include the 2022 Lois B. DeFleur International Innovation Award for the Romance Languages Learning Community, 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, and 2012 Phoenix Award for editorial achievements. She actively mentors students and contributes to academic leadership at Binghamton.
