Dr. Dan Palcu is a geoscientist at Utrecht University's Department of Earth Sciences, specializing in paleomagnetism and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. His research focuses on developing proxies to study anoxia and marine connectivity, particularly in the Paratethys and Atlantic regions. He is affiliated with the Paleomagnetism group and has held positions including a FAPESP fellowship in Brazil and an NSF grant-funded role in Kenya's Koobi Fora Field School. His work integrates rock magnetism, geochemistry, and stratigraphy to understand past environmental changes and their implications for future climate trends.
Key research areas include:
- Marine connectivity dynamics in Eurasia and the South Atlantic
- Development of paleomagnetic proxies for anoxia and redox changes
- Reconstruction of paleogeographic and climatic histories using magnetostratigraphy
- Study of Lake Turkana's evolution and its paleoenvironmental context
His awards include the NWO Veni Fellowship (2021) and a FAPESP Fellowship. Collaborations span countries like Romania, Brazil, Kenya, and Russia, with a focus on fieldwork in Black Sea regions and the Turkana Basin. Teaching contributions include mentoring in field schools and developing educational programs for secondary schools in Romania. Outreach efforts include promoting geoparks and collaborating with artists and journalists to enhance research visibility.
