Dan Mennill is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Science. He specializes in ornithology, focusing on avian behavior, vocal communication, and conservation. His research spans topics such as bird migration patterns, song learning in wild populations, and the impacts of environmental factors like light pollution and climate change on bird survival and behavior.
Dr. Mennill has led field studies on Kent Island, New Brunswick, and in tropical regions like Costa Rica, investigating topics ranging from Savannah sparrow reproduction to tropical wren vocal adaptations. He has supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom have won national awards for their research. His work has been featured in journals such as Evolution, Journal of Ornithology, and Animal Behaviour.
In addition to his research, Mennill has served as Associate Dean of Science for Graduate Studies and Research, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and mentoring young scientists. His lab has pioneered techniques in bioacoustic monitoring, including software tools like Sound Finder for animal localization. He has also engaged the public through events like Birds and Beers, bridging academic research with community education.
Awarded the 2024 Jamie Smith Memorial Mentoring Award by the Society of Canadian Ornithologists, Mennill’s contributions highlight his dedication to both scientific excellence and student development. His current projects include tracking avian flu in Windsor-Essex birds and studying the effects of light pollution on nocturnal migration.
