Dr. Dan J. Puckett is a Professor of History at Troy University’s College of Arts and Sciences and serves as Chair of the Alabama Holocaust Commission. He earned his Ph.D. from Mississippi State University and authored the book In the Shadow of Hitler: Alabama's Jews, the Second World War, and the Holocaust (University of Alabama Press). Since joining Troy University in 2005, he has taught courses on Western Civilization, Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, and World War II at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Puckett’s research focuses on the Holocaust, Southern Jewish history, and Alabama’s 20th-century history. He has lectured nationally on American and southern responses to the Holocaust and contributed to publications like Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Alabama Heritage, and Southern Jewish History. His current project examines African American responses to the Holocaust and its influence on the civil rights movement.
Dr. Puckett has held leadership roles in multiple academic organizations, including past president of the Southern Jewish Historical Society and board memberships in the Alabama Historical Association, Association of Alabama Historians, and Association of Holocaust Organizations.

He has also coordinated TROY’s European study abroad tours, including thematic trips to Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe and historical explorations of Paris, Italy, and the British Isles.
