Dan Geschwind is the Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics, Neurology, and Psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He leads the Geschwind lab and holds additional appointments in Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences and Human Genetics. In 1997, he founded the neurogenetics program within UCLA's Department of Neurology and co-founded the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment in the Semel Institute, which he continues to lead. He also serves as Senior Associate Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor of Precision Health, overseeing campus-wide precision health initiatives.
- Education: A.B. in Chemistry modified with Psychology, Dartmouth College (1982); MD/PhD in Neurobiology, Yale School of Medicine (1991)
His research focuses on connecting human genetic variation to neurobiological pathways to understand neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and neurodegenerative conditions. He pioneered systems biology methods in neurologic and psychiatric disease research, aiming to develop rational therapeutics for brain disorders.
