Dan Fox is a Lecturer in English at Yale University and serves as a senior editor for The Yale Review. He is an accomplished writer, filmmaker, and musician with extensive contributions to art and cultural discourse. Fox authored Limbo (2018) and Pretentiousness: Why It Matters (2016), the latter recognized as a New York Times Notable Book.
His research explores interdisciplinary intersections of art criticism, cultural theory, music history, and documentary filmmaking. Fox’s work examines avant-garde movements, creative expression, and sociocultural frameworks through essays in publications including n+1, The Paris Review, Financial Times, and The Guardian.
Fox received the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant in 2021 and earned a Grierson Award nomination for his BBC-commissioned documentary Other, Like Me: The Oral History of COUM Transmissions and Throbbing Gristle (co-directed with Marcus Werner Hed). His professional background includes 20 years at Frieze magazine (serving as co-editor from 2014-2018) and jury roles for the Turner Prize and Hugo Boss Award.
