Dan Duncan

Dan Duncan is a Senior Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at the School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics at Newcastle University. His research focuses on language variation and change, particularly examining relationships between language and place in metropolitan contexts. He holds a graduate degree from New York University and has conducted sociophonetic analysis of St. Louis metropolitan area speakers.

Research Interests: Language variation and change, sociolinguistics, sociophonetics, sound change, morphology, and the interplay of language with urban geography and toponymy. Current studies explore how language reflects and constructs perceptions of place, with emphasis on metropolitan areas and their sociolinguistic dynamics.

Publications: Recent work includes analyses of fictional dialogue variation, AI sociolinguistic competence, and computational methods in language analysis. Key themes include verb morphology variation (e.g., preterite-to-participle leveling), toponymy, syntax variation, and urban sociolinguistics.
