Dan Bain is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology & Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Urban Studies program at the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. His work focuses on environmental geochemistry, urban hydrology, and the impacts of human activities on natural systems. Bain’s research integrates field observations, laboratory analyses, and computational modeling to address critical zone processes, water quality dynamics, and green infrastructure performance in urban environments.
Key research areas include chemical weathering in urbanized regions, contaminant transport via road runoff and sewer systems, and the biogeochemical implications of unconventional oil and gas development. He has pioneered studies on metal contamination in urban soils and streams, particularly in legacy industrial cities like Pittsburgh. His interdisciplinary approach addresses both scientific and societal challenges, such as environmental justice and climate resilience in marginalized communities.
Bain has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed articles since 2018, focusing on topics like submarine groundwater discharge detection, green roof hydrology, and historical pollution records from lake sediment cores. His work has been supported by collaborations with regional water authorities and community organizations to translate scientific findings into actionable policies. Despite no listed awards, his research has significantly influenced urban environmental management strategies in the Northeastern U.S.
