Dan Adler is an Associate Professor at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, Department of Visual Art & Art History. His research focuses on art writing, modern/contemporary sculpture, German modernism, Frankfurt School theory, and conceptual art. He holds a BA from McGill University, MA from the University of Toronto, and PhD from CUNY.
Adler’s work explores intersections between art practices and socio-political critiques, particularly through assemblage and material culture. Notable publications include Tainted Goods (2018) and Hanne Darboven: Cultural History (2009). He has curated major exhibitions like the Liz Magor retrospective (2016-2017) and contributed to Art History, Artforum, and Border Crossings.
Current research includes Japanese sculpture histories (supported by Japan Foundation grants) and a book project on Hanne Darboven’s late-career installations (funded by DAAD). His work often bridges archival research with contemporary art theory.
