Dr. Damiano G. Barone serves as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, actively contributing to Cambridge Neuroscience's interdisciplinary research ecosystem. His work bridges engineering principles with clinical neuroscience to address critical limitations in neurological injury treatment.
His research program focuses on pioneering next-generation neural bioelectronics through four interconnected thrusts: (1) Biohybrid interfaces integrating living cells for seamless host tissue integration; (2) Minimally invasive implantable devices reducing surgical trauma via keyhole techniques; (3) Mitigation strategies against foreign body reactions to ensure long-term implant functionality; and (4) Advanced circumferential spinal cord interfaces enabling stimulation, recording, and 'spinal cord bypass' systems. These efforts collectively target the nervous system's limited regenerative capacity to restore function after brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve injuries.
Dr. Barone leads translational projects within the Engineering Department's Bioelectronics Laboratory, recently highlighted for developing flexible nerve 'cuffs' capable of wrapping individual nerve fibers without damage—a breakthrough with potential applications across neurological conditions. His work exemplifies Cambridge's commitment to clinically impactful engineering solutions for unmet medical needs.
