Dr. Daisy Fan is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University. She specializes in programming education, scientific computing, and optimization methods. Her teaching includes courses such as CS1112 (Introduction to Computing), CS1132 (Short Course in MATLAB), and CS3220 (Computational Mathematics for Computer Science). She co-authored the textbook Insight Through Computing: A MATLAB Introduction to Computational Science and Engineering with Charles Van Loan.
Her research focuses on collaborative learning methodologies in computer science and engineering education, application of systems analysis to water resources and environmental problems, and optimization techniques for engineering applications. She has investigated topics like stochastic dynamic programming for reservoir control and river basin water quality management. Dr. Fan has received numerous awards for teaching and advising, including the Michael Tien '72 Excellence in Teaching Award (2019) and the Zellman Warhaft Commitment to Diversity Award (2008).
She earned her Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University (2002) and was a research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria (1995). Her work bridges computational science, engineering education, and environmental systems analysis.
