D. Lutters is a Professor at the Department of Design, Production and Management within the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente. He also holds an Adjunct Professor position at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. His teaching responsibilities bridge product design and production engineering, spanning production techniques, design methodology, information management, and virtual reality in both BSc and MSc Industrial Design Engineering programs. He coordinates the MSc track 'Management of Product Development' (MoPD) and focuses on educational methods and innovations.
His research centers on Information-driven Product Development & Engineering, emphasizing the primacy of information over processes in development cycles. The group develops tools and techniques for design support, integrating Virtual Reality, Digital Twins, sustainability, non-deterministic decision-making, and uncertainty analysis. He contributes to research projects at the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform and Project Center (FPC) at the University of Twente, focusing on Industry 4.0, Digital Twins, Virtual Dashboards, and VR/AR solutions.
D. Lutters is a CIRP Fellow and serves as Chairperson of the Scientific Technical Committee (STC) assembly within CIRP. His expertise spans Computer Science, Design, Social Sciences, Economic and Social Development, Project Process Approach, Decision-making, Packaging, and Organisations. He is also a board member of PAO-TM.
