Dr. Cynthia Neal Spence is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College, where she has served since 1981. She holds multiple leadership roles, including Co-chair of the Sociology and Anthropology department, Director of the UNCF/Mellon Programs, and Founding Director of the Social Justice Fellows Program. Her work focuses on higher education access, racial and gender equity, and social justice advocacy.
Education: B.A. from Spelman College, M.A. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University.
Research interests include diversity in STEM, institutional transformation in higher education, and community engagement. She has consulted for organizations such as the Ford Foundation and the University of Chicago. Dr. Spence leads initiatives like the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center and the Crafting Democratic Futures Project. Her grants and collaborations involve major foundations including the Mellon Foundation.
