Cynthia Kinnunen is a part-time Instructor at the Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University, and a doctoral researcher in the Community Music PhD concentration. Based in Guelph, Ontario, she combines music education with community engagement through ensemble programs and festivals.
- Undergraduate degree in Music (piano) with a concurrent diploma in Arts/Non-Profit Management
- Master in Community Music from Wilfrid Laurier University
- Level 3 graduate of the James Hill Ukulele Initiative (JHUI) Teacher Certification Program
Her research focuses on community ensemble learning, social musicking, and lifespan transitions in music education, emphasizing social identity, well-being, and arts-based research methods. She specializes in pedagogy and facilitation using the ukulele as a tool for lifelong music engagement.
Cynthia directs the Royal City Ukulele Ensemble and founded the Royal City Uke Fest, promoting community music through workshops and events globally. She previously taught a unique course at the University of Guelph on the ukulele's role in education, medicine, and culture.
