Cynthia Kenyon is a pioneering biochemist and Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she serves as Director of the Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging. Her groundbreaking research on the nematode C. elegans demonstrated that aging is genetically controllable, revolutionizing the field of biogerontology.
- Education:
- B.S. in Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Georgia (valedictorian, 1976)
- Ph.D., MIT (1981)
- Postdoctoral studies at MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK)
Kenyon's work focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms of aging, particularly through hormone signaling systems conserved across species. Her discovery that single-gene mutations can double lifespan in C. elegans has led to investigations of similar pathways in mammals.
She has received numerous accolades, including:
- King Faisal Prize for Medicine
- American Association of Medical Colleges Award for Distinguished Research
- Ilse & Helmut Wachter Award
- La Fondation IPSEN Prize
- AARP Inspire Award
Kenyon is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and US Institute of Medicine. Her research has influenced both scientific understanding and personal health practices, including her own carbohydrate-restricted diet.
