Cynthia J Williams

Cynthia J Williams is a Professor of Dance and Movement Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she has been a faculty member since 1986. She is based in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts and holds degrees in Dance and Psychology from the University of Utah and an M.F.A. in Dance from Connecticut College.

Her research and scholarly interests center on dance history, somatic education, choreography, and gender issues in dance. She is particularly known for her work on the Ballets Russes, Critical Response Process, and Rommett Floor Barre. She actively integrates somatic training into her pedagogy and performance practice, influenced by her training with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.

Her creative and scholarly output includes choreographic works such as Topography of Exile, Canticle in Darkness and Light, and Absent Presence, as well as academic publications on dance criticism and pedagogy. Her recent publications and conference presentations reflect a strong interdisciplinary focus, bridging dance with music performance, gender studies, and educational theory.
