Cynthia Gleason is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University (WSU), part of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. Her research focuses on plant-parasitic nematodes, particularly root-knot nematodes such as Meloidogyne chitwoodi, which threaten potato crops in the Pacific Northwest. She investigates genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying nematode parasitism and plant defense responses. Dr. Gleason holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California, Davis (2003), and has held academic positions at institutions including Georg-August-University Göttingen in Germany and CSIRO in Australia.
Her research employs gene expression analysis, transgenic plants, and bacterial systems to study nematode effector proteins and host resistance mechanisms. Key projects include identifying novel pathogenicity genes in M. chitwoodi and leveraging plant elicitors delivered by bacteria to enhance crop resistance. She collaborates on developing diagnostic tools, such as Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assays, and genomic resources like the NemaTaxa database to improve nematode detection and management.
Dr. Gleason’s work bridges fundamental science and applied agriculture, addressing both basic biological questions and practical challenges in crop protection. Her contributions span nematology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, with a focus on sustainable solutions for plant-parasitic nematode control.
