Curtis Ryan

Curtis Ryan is a Professor of Political Science in the Department of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University's College of Arts and Sciences, where he has taught since 2002. His academic journey includes a B.A. in History and Political Science from Drew University, followed by M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Ryan's research focuses on Middle East politics, with particular expertise in Jordanian politics, international relations, foreign policy, and inter-Arab alliances. His scholarly work explores political transitions, regime security, and the complex dynamics of Middle Eastern international relations. He has published extensively in prominent journals including the Middle East Journal, The British Journal of Middle East Studies, and Middle East Policy.

His notable publications include three major books that have significantly contributed to understanding Jordan's political evolution: Jordan in Transition: From Hussein to Abdullah (2002), Inter-Arab Alliances: Regime Security and Jordanian Foreign Policy (2009), and Jordan and the Arab Uprisings - Regime Survival and Politics Beyond the State (2018). These works examine critical transitions in Jordanian politics, regional alliance structures, and the kingdom's response to the Arab Spring.

Professor Ryan teaches courses in International Politics & Foreign Policy, Comparative Politics, Middle East Politics, Islam and Politics, Current Political Issues, and Seminar in International Relations Theory at the graduate level. His research demonstrates how Jordan has navigated regional instability while maintaining relative stability, with particular attention to the interplay between domestic politics and international pressures.
