Curtis Acosta is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Secondary Education Program at the University of Arizona. He previously served as a high school teacher for nearly two decades in Tucson, where he developed Chican@/Latin@ Literature courses for the Mexican American Studies program in the Tucson Unified School District.
Education:
- Bachelor’s of Arts from Willamette University, Salem, Oregon
- Master’s of Arts in Language, Reading, and Culture from the University of Arizona
- Ph.D. in Language, Reading, and Culture from the University of Arizona
Dr. Acosta’s research focuses on community and culturally sustaining pedagogy, humanizing teaching practices, and empowering youth of color to achieve academic success. His work has been highlighted in the documentary Precious Knowledge and profiled by major media outlets, including The Daily Show, CNN, and The New York Times.
He has contributed articles to journals such as The English Journal, Voice in Urban Education, and Multicultural Perspectives, and co-authored influential books like Educational Courage: Resisting the Ambush of Public Education and Rethinking Sexism, Gender, and Sexuality.
Advising and Collaborations:
Dr. Acosta actively supports educators in implementing culturally sustaining pedagogies and humanizing practices. He is a founder faculty affiliate, emphasizing his role in bridging community and academic contexts.
