Curry Guinn is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Computer Science. After earning a B.S. in Computer Science and Philosophy from Virginia Tech and M.S./Ph.D. in Computer Science from Duke University, he spent ten years in industry at RTI International as a Research Engineer focusing on AI, virtual reality, and simulations. He transitioned to academia in 2004, serving 20 years at the University of North Carolina Wilmington as a professor and Department Chair before joining CU Boulder in 2024. His research spans artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and machine learning, while his teaching focuses on core computer science areas like programming, algorithms, and formal models.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary work, including AI ethics, human-computer interaction, and educational technology. Notable projects include developing adaptive game agents, analyzing Alzheimer’s communication patterns, and creating VR-based training tools. His work bridges theoretical computer science with practical applications in education and social systems.
Publications highlight contributions to NLP, VR bias studies, and STEM education initiatives. Teaching philosophy emphasizes student-driven learning, particularly in online environments, valuing collaborative interactions and self-motivated learners. Outside academia, Guinn enjoys outdoor activities, global travel, and exploring art museums and literature.
