Csaba Leranth, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences and of Neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine. His research focuses on neuroendocrine mechanisms, synaptic plasticity, and the effects of environmental chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) on brain structure. He holds affiliations with the Neural Transplant and Neurobehavior Program and the Reproductive Neurosciences Group.
Education includes an MD from Semmelweis University (1964) and a PhD from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1978). His work explores hormonal influences on synapses, particularly in hippocampal and prefrontal regions, with implications for depression, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease models. Key findings include BPA’s disruption of estrogen-dependent synaptogenesis and testosterone’s effects on neural connectivity.
Recent studies emphasize BPA’s cognitive deficits in non-human primates and sex-specific responses to phencyclidine (PCP) in schizophrenia models. He has contributed to gene therapy approaches for Parkinson’s disease using stem cells and GDNF delivery.
Notable awards include the 1994 Wolfgang-Bargman Prize. His interdisciplinary teams investigate neuroendocrine pathways, with collaborations across Yale’s departments and global institutions. Ongoing research addresses translational applications of synaptic plasticity mechanisms to neurological disorders.
