Crysal VanKooten is an Associate Professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Cultures at Michigan State University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters. She teaches in Professional and Public Writing, Rhetoric and Writing graduate programs, and first-year writing courses. She co-edits The Journal for Undergraduate Multimedia Projects (JUMP+).
Her research explores how digital technologies shape composition practices, pedagogy, and scholarly inquiry. Central to her work is understanding how multimedia tools like video influence student learning and writing processes. She has published in leading journals including College English, Computers and Composition, and Kairos.
Her monograph Transfer across Media (2021), funded by a CCCC award, examines first-year students' video composition projects through qualitative research. This work highlights pedagogical strategies for integrating multimedia in writing instruction.
VanKooten has received recognition for her research, including the Conference on College Composition and Communication Emergent Research/er Award. Her teaching and scholarship emphasize multimodal literacy and the evolving role of technology in composition studies.
